Pardon me for trying to be a 'guru' but in dedate, we simply have to define so many stuff. Firstly, we assuming the sentence is made with REFERENCE to the PREVIOUS generation, since "today" is being highlighted. Thus, almost all arguments must against our 'parents'.
Well.. to add on / supplement your point
>> Technology advancement (Internet etc.. ) which creates more exposure and children becoming more aware and 'smart'. This leads to a problem where there is knowledge overdose, but a lack of maturity in handling it. Thus, it gives the impression the youths are arrogant.
>> Social Openess. The older generations are more culturally influenced (eg. kids should not talk back.. children should be quiet when adult talks...) In today's world, these values are not passed down or reinforced. Children are taught to question and be curious. As such, the 'questioning' of adults appear arrogant.
Personally, I do not think they are more selfish though. But they are more attention-seeking. In comparsion, the older generations were more conservative and this creates the impression that Youth are arrogant once again.
Just my 2 cents :)
